Things that are helpful to know

In a previous post, we have covered some of the things that we need to know to quote on a job. But here is a list of some extra things might help with safety or quality.

Group shots

This is the most common one. Large group shots are not always straightforward - a good result requires adequate light and space. If a large group shot is likely please let us know in advance so that we can bring additional light and scout out a suitable spot.

An extreme example happened some years ago at a well-known vocational training company when without any prior warning it was announced that there would be a group photo of 200+ people. Through sheer luck we happened to have lighting equipment available from a different shot and an accessible balcony nearby so it ended up being quite a good result.

Lasers

A laser shining directly on a cameras sensor can cause damage. For example:

If lasers are to be used in a production we are still happy to cover it - we just need be consulted in advance so that we can avoid them.

Pyrotechnics

There are some obvious safety aspects here, but that’s generally taken care of by a harried-looking person clutching a fire extinguisher if you stray too close. The main problem here is late notice - good shots of fireworks need a tripod. On one or two occasions over the years someone has forgotten to advise of fireworks, leading to a rush to grab and set up the right gear in time.

Surprises

Sometimes it’s a birthday cake, sometimes pyrotechnics (see above), sometimes a Big Name making a surprise entrance. Either way we need to know in advance so that we’re in the right position at the right time.

VIPs

A Very Important Person is attending your function. Maybe lots of them. For security reasons you’re not telling anyone. That’s fine, but at least tell us the scope of the job.

A couple of years ago a client waved off questions for what turned out to be a whole host of politicians at the highest level, then expected us to be in two places at once covering a Federal minister here, a Premier over there and the odd billionaire thrown in for good measure. Had they been less secretive we would have known to send more staff.

We don’t care who the VIPs are, but we do care that the job is done well and that means proper planning.

The name of the client or job

This is purely administrative, but PR/marketing/event agencies leave out the client name more often that you would think. “Unknown event 13/03/21” is not a very satisfactory job name and makes any quotes we provide look a trifle unfinished.
